ENHANCEMENT OF THE RAILWAY STATION SQUARE, COLLALBO

A renewed space combining architectural quality and new tourism needs

Roland Baldi Architects

The redesign of the open space surrounding Collalbo Station aims to redefine the identity of the place, starting from the acknowledgment of the role and architectural quality of the railway building. The station is isolated at the center of a new pedestrian ground. Its flooring design unifies the platform with the space in front of it, transformed into a square to welcome tourists and inhabitants. Vehicular flows are interrupted on the side of the square hosting the roundabout with the short-stop parking spots. The redesign of the square is based on alternate strips of porphyry cobble cubes, which define – in designers’ words – a “carpet of natural stones” interrupted by the presence of some small, squared flowerbeds recalling their rhythm. The length of the stripe is also recalled on the prospect of the building: the result is a rhythm that unifies the overall design and generates a pattern made up of the various elements that compose the open space.
