BUGA WOOD PAVILION

An experimental structure for the redevelopment of a dismissed industrial area

Institute for Computational Design (ICD), Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE)

The Buga Wood Pavilion was realized as the prototype of a temporary structure and inaugurated at the Bundesgartenschau in 2019, on the island of Heilbronn. A prefabricated experimental structure with completely robotized production, is inspired by the plated skeletons of sand dollars. It recalls its sinuous lines, in keeping with the resistance provided by the form and lightness of wood. The double-curved segmented wood shell consists of 376 empty plates with various forms, individually modeled through an automatized process by a robotic platform that was created ad hoc. After its inauguration, the Buga Wood Pavilion was awarded the prize for the use of innovative materials at the Iconic Awards 2019, and then with the title of “excellent architecture”, through the victory of the German Design Award 2020.
