MUSEUM TODAY, BETWEEN EXPERIMENTATION AND TRADITION

introduction

Paola Guarini

In August 2022, the Extraordinary General Assembly of ICOM approved the new definition of “Museum”, which modifies and integrates the previous one from 2007, to suit and reflect on the changed reality of the last 15 years. In addition to reaffirming that a museum is a nonprofit permanent institution and at the service of society, which performs research, collects, keeps, interprets and exposes material and immaterial heritage, introduces some mandatory themes of our time, such as accessibility, inclusivity, diversity, sustainability and the idea of wider participation and involvement of the community. The proposed model of the museum is hence relational and aims at the active participation of visitors in the construction and representation of meanings.
