The client initially asked for\u00a0a new pavilion to be situated atop a new pier floating on\u00a0the Hudson River.\u00a0Thomas Heatherwick recalls how, upon\u00a0receiving this request, the team saw an\u00a0opportunity to develop a site that would further involve\u00a0New Yorkers by offering them an unusual public park.\u00a0The project thus pursued the ambition of providing visitors\u00a0a unique spatial experience: the excitement of being over\u00a0the water, the feeling of leaving traffic behind and being\u00a0immersed in greenery.\u00a0This 11,000 square metre floating urban oasis\u00a0is\u00a0suspended above 132 columns of differing heights,\u00a0surmounted by prefabricated concrete \u201cpots\u201d: true and\u00a0proper sculptures designed by Arup, whose organic forms,\u00a0inspired by natural vegetation, produce a unique artificial\u00a0wilderness solidly rooted to the river bottom.\u00a0Thomas Heatherwick defines the columns that\u00a0support this complex artificial topography as the true \u201cheroes\u201d of the project, capable of transforming the load\u00a0bearing structure into \u201cscenographic flowerpots\u201d that\u00a0create a \u201crichly-planted undulating landscape\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The commission for this project was received by the\u00a0London office in 2013 from the Hudson River Park Trust.
